Getting Started

The following are general requirements before you can start your practical driving tuition.

You will need a provisional driving licence?

Generally, you can apply for the licence up to 3 months before your 17th Birthday, but it is NOT valid until you turn 17.

DVLA's guide on applying for a licence online:

Apply now online via the Official DVLA Website

If you don’t wish to do this online, you can apply for your provisional driving licence by completing the D1 application form that is available from the DVLA form ordering service click here or Post Office® branches.

DVSA eyesight test

You can meet the minimum eyesight requirement

You should be able to read the new-style number plate (plates starting with two letters followed by two numbers, for example AB51 ABC.) displayed on a vehicle from a distance of 20 metres.

For vehicles displaying old-style number plates, the minimum distance is 20.5 metres.

If you can only do this with the use of glasses or corrective lenses, then you must wear them whenever you are driving (this includes when you are carrying out manoeuvres, e.g. reverse parking).
